Key Differences Between RNs and RPNs:

RNs and RPNs are both qualified health professionals who play essential roles in patient care. Depending on the complexity of a client’s needs, they may work either an RN or an RPN, or both.

  • RNs typically have a broader scope of practice, including more complex patient assessments, care planning, and the ability to initiate independent actions based on patient needs. RPNs usually work under the direction of an RN or physician for more advanced clinical interventions.

  • RNs have greater autonomy in making decisions about patient care and may take the lead in critical situations. RPNs work in a more supervised or collaborative role with other healthcare providers.

  • RNs manage and provide care for patients with complex, high-risk conditions, while RPNs typically focus on more routine or stable patient care needs.
